| There are many VGM composers that sell music on Bandcamp |
I know that a lot of us use streaming services like Spotify but sometimes it's nice to actually feel like you're directly supporting the artists you love by purchasing their albums. Spotify is infamous for giving hardly anything back to artists with only $0.003 - $0.005 per stream. Bandcamp has been around for a while and while it doesn't have as wide a reach as platforms like Spotify, there are still quite a few VGM composers that sell their music on the platform.
I was hoping a Google Search would reveal a website that already listed a whole bunch of cool VGM artists that sold their music on Bandcamp but unfortunately, I couldn't find one, and this is what motivated me to create the page you're reading right now. I hope you find it useful!
Below are 28 VGM Composers which have great music on sale. Note that this isn't an exhaustive list but tends to feature my favourite artists and composers that actually sell VGM on their Bandcamp page.
Ben Babbitt
Babbitt is probably best known in gaming circles as the composer for the critically acclaimed adventure game, Kentucky Route Zero. While the game was probably a bit too “arthouse" for my tastes, the soundtrack was definitely a highlight so his page is definitely worth checking out.Brandon Blume
Blume has scored for a few games, usually ones associated with the Sierra adventure game fan community. Blume composed the music for Mage's Initiation: Reign of Elements which happens to be available on his Bandcamp page.Alexander Brandon
Alexander Brandon is a bit of a legend in the VGM world, especially when it came to his awesome tracker music in the 90s and early 2000s with the likes of Jazz Jackrabbit, Unreal and Deus Ex. Brandon has a few albums available on his site, including MOD collections and soundtracks for Tyrian and Aven Colony. My personal recommendation would be the Deus Ex remixes album called "Conspiravision". Choicest Games reviewed "Conspiravision" back in 2020 and gave it a very respectable 9/10.Allister Brimble
Allister Brimble is also a well known VGM composer, especially when it comes to music on retro PC systems such as the Amiga and Spectrum (with music from both of these systems featuring on his Bandcamp page). Brimble also has music from Driver, Rollercoaster Tycoon and even a few tracks from Chris Sawyer's Locomotion on there (although I don't know why he's titled them “Transport Tycoon", even if the game is a sort of sequel).Chipzel
Niamh Houston (aka Chipzel) is a chiptune composer who has contributed to the soundtracks of games like Super Hexagon, Interstellaria and Dicey Dungeons. Her music really elevates the gaming experiences (to the point where her soundtrack was probably the best part of Interstellaria). She has soundtracks to all the aforementioned games and more available on her Bandcamp page.Chris Christodoulou
If you've ever played Risk of Rain or its sequel and really loved the music, go check out Chris Christodoulou's Bandcamp page, right now! I actually ended up getting the album for Risk of Rain and reviewing it back in 2014: I really enjoyed it. It's really got a sci-fi, prog rock vibe to it that makes it worth a listen, even when you're not playing the game.ConcernedApe
Probably better known as the developer behind the indie hit Stardew Valley, Eric Barone aka ConcernedApe actually has a Bandcamp page (would you believe) and although it's only got one album on it (the Stardew Valley soundtrack) it currently contains a whopping 100 tracks.Ben Crossbones
Ben Crossbones's Bandcamp page doesn't contain much on it at the moment but it does include a highly recommended soundtrack: the soundtrack to the zombie parody of the Oregon Trail known as Organ Trail. Music in the game was definitely a highlight and if you like creepy chiptune music mixed with rock, you've come to the right place.Olivier Deriviere
Deriviere is no stranger to composing soundtracks for some big name titles, such as Greedfall, A Plague Tale and South of Midnight but my favourite work of his has to be Streets of Rage 4. The soundtrack is a treat for those that are into 80s and 90s dance music as well as synthwave and chiptune. While it's true that legends such as Yuzo Kushiro and Motohiro Kawashima contribute to the soundtrack, as well as many other guest composers, Deriviere does the lion's share and lays the foundation for a truly special album. Deriviere has many soundtracks available on his Bandcamp page so it's well worth a look.Toby Fox
Like Eric Barone, Toby Fox is probably better known for the hit indie game he developed which in this case is, of course, Undertale, but Fox is more of a composer than a game designer and the soundtrack is definitely the game's forte. In fact, if you visit anywhere on the Internet, it's almost impossible not to hear his soundtrack playing as background music to a video or serving as inspiration for a remix. On his Bandcamp page you can find multiple albums dedicated to both Undertale and Deltarune.Jonathan Geer
A frequent collaborator with David Galindo of Vertigo Gaming, Geer's soundtracks in the Cook, Serve, Delicious! games keep getting better and better and they're all available on his Bandcamp page. Other soundtracks that are also available include Owlboy and Core Keeper.Jim Guthrie
Guthrie has quite a few soundtracks for sale on his Bandcamp page but my first exposure to his music was the eerie but electrifying soundtrack for Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery: EP. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this wouldn't be the last time I enjoyed one of his soundtracks, as he also scored the soundtrack to Planet Coaster with JJ Ipsen.Robert Holmes
If you're a Sierra adventure game fan, especially one who is into the Gabriel Knight series, you'd have heard Holmes's music before. While his Bandcamp page doesn't feature much in the way of VGM, it does have “A Simple Refrain", an album which has pianist Roger Hooper perform some of Holmes's game themes. While it does contain music from the Gabriel Knight series, it's nice to see music from other games, such as Moebius: Empire Rising. The Daniel Indart Project
I'm not sure if anyone still remembers the original Tropico (released in 2001 by PopTop Software and Gathering of Developers). If you happen to be one of the lucky few that did, you'll remember it had a phenomenal soundtrack, that was trying to stay authentic to its setting with a very Cuban sound (contemporary interest in acts like the Buena Vista Social Club during the late 1990s and early 2000s also probably helped). The Daniel Indart Project happens to have a Bandcamp page that sells a lot of this style of music but fans of VGM will most likely be interested in the two Tropico albums which even had some of its music featured in TV shows.Barry Leitch
Leitch has been making game music since the late 80s , so calling him a bit of a veteran is an understatement. I first got into his music when listening to the awesome soundtrack to 1991's Utopia: Creation of a Nation and I hope that one day, he decides to remaster or remix its soundtrack. But until then, he has a few albums available for purchase on his Bandcamp page. Along with a few Horizon Chase albums, he also has a TFX album that I recently reviewed. Well worth a listen if you're into chiptune or oldschool synth arpeggios.Magnus "SoulEye" Palsson
SoulEye has composed music for quite a few games but he's probably best known for his chiptune-inspired soundtrack that serves as background music to Terry Cavanagh's VVVVVV. While I found the game bloody frustrating, I probably stayed around longer than I should've thanks to the awesome soundtrack by SoulEye. If you're into the music as much as I am, you should check out his Bandcamp page.Jordan Pearson
Jordan Pearson is one of those people that can wear many hats and he's the creative mind behind the Cally's Caves series of games. Pearson does the coding, the graphics and the music although he gets some help with the design work from July Pearson and the music from David Stanich. The soundtracks for Cally's Caves 2, 3 and 4 are available off his Bandcamp pageBen Prunty
Prunty is a frequent composer of indie game soundtracks and has collaborated with Subset Games twice: firstly on the soundtrack that arguably made him famous, FTL: Faster than Light and Into the Breach. His Bandcamp page has both of the aforementioned soundtracks available and more.Joshua Queen
Queen has composed soundtracks for quite a few indie games and these are all available on his Bandcamp page. He has collaborated with Zeboyd Games a few times and that's how I'm familiar with his music after I played the very funny Cthulhu Saves Christmas. The soundtrack is cool, funky, care-free and heavy, all at once.Amos Roddy
I haven't heard all of Roddy's music but he's scored music for quite a few famous indie games including the Kingdom games, Ball x Pit and a few games by developer Jump On Age, such as the Citizen Sleeper games and the one I'm most familiar with, In Other Waters. The soundtrack truly has a magical, dreamy vibe, as you'd expect from a game set underwater, and I can definitely hear a bit of Jean Michel-Jarre seeping in. Almost a bit too ambient for my tastes but it's really good stuff and his Bandcamp page is worth a visit.George "The Fat Man" Sanger
Another veteran when it comes to Video Game Music is George "The Fat Man" Sanger. Sanger has composed music since the early 80s on Atari 8-bit computers but I reckon he really came into his element during the 90s with such gems like the Wing Commander soundtrack as well as The 7th Guest. Sanger has the soundtracks to these games along with many others available from his Bandcamp page.Jay Tholen
Tholen is best known for his work on the games Dropsy as well as the excellent Hypnospace Outlaw. I love the music of Hypnospace Outlaw in particular and you'll find many reviews of the game's music on this blog. If you're wanting to get the music, be sure to visit Tholen's Bandcamp page. It's worth mentioning that others that collaborated with Tholen also have their soundtracks available on Bandcamp such as Hot Dad's excellent “The Chowder Man" and Chris Schlarb's “Cosmic Pilgrimage"Jeff Van Dyck
It's good to see some Australian representation on this list and Van Dyck has composed music for a whole number of games including well known titles like Rome: Total War and Unpacking. He also happened to score music for Australian indie games such as Hand of Fate and Submerged so there's plenty to peruse on his Bandcamp page.Austin Wintory
Wintory is probably best known for his work on Journey but he is quite versatile with his music: whether it's the Nordic sounding The Banner Saga, the ragtime hijinx of Monaco, or the swanky jazz of Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded, he knows how to bring the most out of a game through its music. His toughest challenge (and he's mentioned this on the Academy of Interactive Art and Sciences (AIAS) Game Maker's Notebook podcast) was the composing of music for the musical visual novel game, Stray Gods, where you not only get to choose what to say but also what to sing. Wintory has the above soundtracks for sale and many more on his Bandcamp page.Tim "CoLDSToRAGE" Wright
Wright is probably best known for his work on the soundtracks for 1990's Lemmings as well as 1995's Wipeout and 1996's Wipeout 2097. His Bandcamp page contains several albums including Amiga remixes as well as music from the games mentioned above.Philippe Vachey
Vachey is a French video game music composer who has scored soundtracks for classics such as the original Alone in the Dark as well as the two Little Big Adventure games. I particularly enjoyed his Little Big Adventure Symphonic Suite album and this is available on his Bandcamp page along with the soundtracks to other games.Jonas "Wrench" Kjellberg
Wrench has a few video game music albums on his Bandcamp page but the one I would recommend is the soundtrack to the wacky adventure game Paradigm: it has a very 80s/90s retro vibe.Alex Yoder
If you're into chiptune horror music, then it's worth checking out the Crawl soundtrack by Alex Yoder. He also has a couple of other game soundtracks on his Bandcamp page. Are there any other cool VGM Bandcamp pages out there?
So there are actually a bunch of other pages that sell Video Game Music on Bandcamp but they are either actual record labels or publisher/developer pages, so they weren't included on the list above. I've listed them below if you are interested.Sid Meier's Civilization
Sells the soundtracks to Civilization games since Civ V. Available on their Bandcamp page.DATA Discs
Sells remastered versions of OutRun and the Streets of Rage soundtracks, among others, on their Bandcamp page.Double Fine
Sells soundtracks to many Double Fine games including Broken Age, Psychonauts and The Cave. Available for sale on their Bandcamp page.EA Music (Lakeshore Records)
Sells Battlefield, Sims 4 and the Mass Effect soundtracks, among others, on their Bandcamp page.Firegirl
Sells the soundtrack to Firegirl on their Bandcamp page.Freebird Games
Sells the soundtracks to games developed by Freebird such as To the Moon and Finding Paradise, among others, on their Bandcamp page.Gunpoint
Sells the soundtrack to Gunpoint on their Bandcamp page.Kid Katana
Sells soundtracks to many games including Lost Records: Bloom and Rage, Jusant and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, among others on their Bandcamp page.Terrible Toybox
Sells the soundtrack to Thimbleweed Park on their Bandcamp page.XEEN
Sells a lot of game soundtracks which sometimes makes me wonder if it's all legit (although according to the page, permission has been sought from all the original composers). Contains the music for many Sierra adventure games and many other games from the DOS era. You can find them for sale on their Bandcamp page.So what did you think of the list?
