Paid Peanuts

While scrolling through social media I came across a reel where a couple were in hysterics, listening to voice samples they had recorded for a cute game with animals: they were playing MyVoiceZoo. Although it's often seen as a gimmick, the ability to record your voice is a means of creative expression; also the potential for some wholesome family fun meant I immediately thought my kids (especially the youngest) would enjoy this. Browsing the Steam store revealed the game was only a measly AUD $4.50 so it was an instant buy.

What Does the Fox Say?

At its core, MyVoiceZoo is an incremental game or idler. Simply leaving the game will cause you to accrue points or credits that you can cash in for upgrades. In this game, you're the keeper of a zoo and as you accrue coins you can unlock new animals that will reward you with even more coins over time. What makes this game different from the competition is that each time you adopt a new animal, you can name it and then record a three second audio clip using the microphone. It can be as conventional or as silly as you want. Want your owl to hoot? Record yourself hooting on the microphone. Want your owl to warn King Graham about poisonous snakes? You can do that too. Both my son and I had heaps of fun recording funny voices for each of the animals and there are 30 animals to unlock. But once you've reached that number, that's it.

But Wait, There's More!... Just Not Much More...

There are a few other things you can unlock though, such as costumes that will cause all animals to mimic the voice of a particular animal (e.g. wearing a frog costume will make all your animals sound like the frog), camps where you can have "concerts" (animals making noise in different sequences), as well as two unlockable areas which cause any animal voices in the room to either be sped up or slowed down. It really doesn't take long before everything is unlocked (you can manage to do so within a couple of hours) which is great in a way but it means the game is over very quickly. That's why I think it's better to brand MyVoiceZoo as an interactive toy of sorts. A bit of cheap fun for all the family. Or a good game to stream, which is how I found out about the game in the first place!

MyVoiceZoo is nothing more than an idler where you provide the sound effects for your very own zoo animals. If this is all you're expecting, it will meet your expectations and can be hilarious fun for the young and the young at heart. It's just unfortunate that it takes less than two hours to unlock all the content and there is nothing else to it.

Recommended for kids or those wanting to make funny gaming reels.
