Civilization VII to be the First in Series to Allow Civ Swapping

Earlier yesterday, a gameplay trailer was released for Civilization VII and it's immediately apparent that the game looks similar to its predecessor although the fidelity of the graphics have definitely been beefed up. Along with announcements of Gwedoline Christie (of "Game of Thrones" fame) being the new narrator (and the first female narrator for the series) and Christopher Tin returning to score the main theme (he scored the theme for Civilization IV and Civilization VI) the big difference with Civ VII is the ability to change your civilization throughout the course of the game.

The game will be split into three ages: the Antiquity Age, Exploration Age and Modern Age. Once you've picked a leader and depending on the way you play the game, by the time you reach the beginning of the next age, you'll be given the opportunity to change your civilization.

Leaders are also no longer associated with a civilization which means you could potentially play as Hatshepsut of Rome. They will also have a unique ability that can be further customised through attributes gained through gameplay. For the first time in a Civ game, the leaders available aren't only political leaders but they could be leaders of science, philosophy, human rights, etc.

While reception seems to have been generally positive there are some fans that are concerned the game is too similar to another 4X game developed by Amplitude Studios and released in 2021 called Humankind.

There'll be more information released about the game as we get closer to the release date of 11 February 2025.
