The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Wednesday to update readers on what I've been playing during the week (this also includes games on my "Pile of Shame"). The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Battlefield 2042

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 100%

I tried something new in order to resolve my issues with loading the game twice in order to connect to EA Servers: I moved the game from my normal hard disk onto the SSD. The good news is, this seemed to resolve the issue I was having so I only need to load the game once and I'm at the main menu screen. The bad news is, I have a very small SSD which meant I only had a few measly gigs of space left. Thankfully, I've cleared it up a bit so there's at least 20GB free now, and while it's an improvement, it's still not ideal.

I also received an email from EA recently saying they have taken action against a player I reported for cheating (in this case, it was someone using an aimbot). It's good to see they actually take notice of our reports. I just hope that whichever player I happened to report actually got banned.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 100%

I started a new multiplayer game this week with my wife. I'm now playing as Dido of Phoenicia and I must say I do like a good maritime civ, which Phoenicia definitely is. Unfortunately, a lot of their bonuses appear to occur early on in the game but they still have some neat bonuses with their special harbours called "cothons" even in the late game.

We had a slow start but are starting to catch up now across all victory types except for maybe a culture victory which is something we have to keep our eyes on.

Kapia

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 100%

I've finished Kapia and am working on a review for the game. A short point 'n' click adventure but that's not necessarily a bad thing (Full Throttle only runs for 5 hours and is a classic Lucasarts adventure in my books).

To be honest I'm a bit surprised at how the ending panned out. I didn't see it coming, and I'm not sure if that's the point (i.e. it's meant to be a big surprise). It does seem to have a happy ending although it's left it open-ended enough so that a potential sequel could be made. A short, but sweet family-friendly point 'n' click adventure, oh and it also works on the Steam Link too with my Logitech F710 controller!

VVVVVV

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 60%

It's been a while since I played this game but I tried it again recently and made some good progress, rescuing three crewmates. Despite me loving the music in this game and its retro aesthetic, I'm not sure if I'm ever going to try playing this game again. I find platformers painful and VVVVVV can be really tricky at times. I'm stuck at one point where you're basically guiding one of your crewmates past hazards which just makes the whole endeavour even more complex than it should be.

Game works fine on the Steam Link with a Logitech F710 controller.

Bomber Crew

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 22%

I don't know why I picked Bomber Crew as a game to play but I think the rationale was for a quick game I could relax to or at least one I could play in short doses. It more or less seems to fit the bill but the game is anything but relaxing. Trying to get a Lancaster bomber back to England by the skin of your teeth is very stressful! And I have already failed multiple times! I love it though. It reminds me of the times I played Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe back in the day, where I tried all the tricks up my sleeve to keep a badly damaged B-17 Flying Fortress in the air as it hobbled its way back to base. Good times. And I'm definitely feeling the same vibes playing Bomber Crew.
