Pile of Shame Sunday - 23rd May 2021

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition

This week while playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition, I received a "pleasant" surprise when I had to download an 11GB patch only a few days after release! Ouch! There was also no explanation for it until I had almost finished downloading the damn thing.

Anyway, been doing a lot of side quests in Mass Effect 1 which means a lot of driving the Mako. One thing I noticed in the Legendary Edition is that by default the Mako now moves automatically in the direction you steer your turret. To me, this seems counterintuitive especially after driving tanks in games like Battlefield V but thankfully the options gives you the opportunity to swtich back to classic mode. One thing that is annoying me though are the framerate drops during the Mako segments. Apparently, its not an isolated incident and next time I play, I'm going to try tweaking the display settings to see if it improves the performance: apparently disabling V-Sync and lowering the refresh rate helps.

On the topic of gripes I have with the Legendary Edition, I've encounterd a medi-gel bug where using the Marksman ability as an engineer and firing immediately afterwards seems to trigger the use of medi-gel. This can sometimes result in me wasting all my medi-gel in the first minute of a mission which is pretty annoying. I'm hoping a patch comes soon to fix it.

I've also rescued Dr Liara T'Soni so she is now part of the crew. I'm trying to bring crew members that complement my skillset which means bringing Liara (for her biotic abilities) and someone with weapons proficiency. Now normally, Ashley Williams would be the perfect choice for that role, but I really can't stand her, so as a compromise, I've decided to bring Garrus along (besides, Garrus is just the coolest, amirite?)

I've also stumbled across dialogue I've never encountered before despite playing the trilogy several times before, so I actually was pleasantly surprised when I came across those. I've also noticed slight improvements to environmental audio such as Liara's echoey voice sounding more prominent while held in the Prothean force field, or you actually being able to hear the footsteps while the squad escapes the collapsing tunnel.
