It's been a six year hiatus but time to return to Pillars of Eternity

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Disco Elysium

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 22%

I just realised that when you internalise thoughts in this there are only a limited number of slots (that you unlock with the points you get when you level up) however some of the thoughts you develop can sometimes have negative effects, like one I recently researched. This is a problem since in order to get to the docks I need to get past a beefy racist called Measurehead and I could possibly do so if I somehow fool him into believing that I have subscribed to his advanced race theory. However, with no free slots, I have to wait until I level up before I get a chance to do so.

I'm also running out of options on what to say and do (I have failed a lot of skill checks in this game). I'm hoping this doesn't become an issue later but I guess we shall see.

Pillars of Eternity

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 1%

It's been a long time since I've last played Pillars of Eternity. In fact, according to Steam the last time I played the game was back in March 2015 which is now more than 6 years ago! Isn't it crazy how quickly time flies? I mean, there's even been enough time for Obsidian Entertainment to have developed a sequel! I was actually a Kickstarter Backer for Project Eternity which eventually became the game Pillars of Eternity so there's extra incentive for me to finish this game, but like many oldschool CRPGs, it's probably going to take a while (at least 30+ hours if the stats on HowLongToBeat.com are to be believed)

Anyway, I haven't got too far yet besides creating a new character who is a "Chanter". I'm guessing they're kind of similar to bards from D&D since they can sing songs that gives buffs to their party. It could be a challenge to play since I don't usually play this kind of class

Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 9%

I've corrected the Percentage Complete this time hence why the value has dropped from 16 to 9%. Not that it matters much though as I still have no idea what I'm doing. I made an attempt at mapping the game but it's not as straight forward as you might think. For example, if you exit west from a certain screen it automatically takes Robin to the Map screen, yet when I tried to replicate the behaviour again, it didn't happen. So I think it matters where exactly on the screen you exit (i.e. if you exit west on the top part of the screen or the bottom this will take you to different places).

However, it seems like mapping Sherwood Forest is going to be a necessity since I actually triggered a main story event when I just stumbled across Maid Marian being attacked. Obviously, I rescued her and this progressed the game by one day. I'm guessing I'll need to find more random encounters in Sherwood Forest in order to keep progressing the story.
