You know it's serious when they use the truck to breach into the building

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Disco Elysium

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 21%

I didn't play any Disco Elysium this week but it seems to have made the news recently as the latest version coming to consoles called "the Final Cut" is apparently going to be banned in Australia. What this means for the version of Disco Elysium on Steam is anybody's guess but it's still on sale, for now.

XCOM: Chimera Squad

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 100%

A good reason I didn't play Disco Elysium this week is because I finally completed XCOM: Chimera Squad!

My biggest hurdle was taking down Sacred Coil but after two attempts on the third and final encounter, I managed to scrape through. Both times I tried to focus on the Gatekeeper (as the Gatekeeper brings in reinforcements) however the second time I ensured to make full use of all my agents' abilities and it turns out Patchwork's Stasis skill and her Capacitor Discharge were very useful (e.g. the Capacitor Discharge managed to zap all the enemy units at one point as they were bunched around a portal).

However, the game wasn't over after taking down Sacred Coil. There was another three-encounter mission to save City Hall and yet another mission to take down the organisation known as Atlas after that: the Take Down Atlas mission was the final mission and it involved four encounters. The final two missions were nowhere near as difficult as the Take Down Sacred Coil mission so it seems like the difficulty spike was reserved for that mission only.

Anyway, the game is now complete and the ending cinematic hints that we may have not heard the last of Chimera Squad so guess there may be a sequel in the works (depending on how well it sold I guess)? Will I play a sequel if one were to be released? Probably, but I'm definitely not going to play on Normal difficulty next time as I hate unwarranted difficulty spikes.

Looks like Luke will have to find me another game to investigate on my Pile of Shame

Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 16%

I started playing Conquests of the Longbow and I love the setting and the research Christy Marx did on this game (similar to the extensive research she did for her previous game, Conquests of Camelot). I'm also feeling quite at home using the SCI interface and enjoying the VGA graphics. The medieval music is also well done. What I don't understand though is what I'm meant to do now that I'm on the second day. It seems like you can visit some locations off a map but there are other locations that aren't marked on the map (e.g. the archery range). It makes me wonder if there are other secret locations scattered across Sherwood Forest but that means I may have to prepare for a lot of exploration and drawing maps on pieces of paper. I also hope that consulting the manual will shed some light on how to play the game.
