Choicest VGM - VGM #475 - Cthulhu Saves the World - The Trial (First Dungeon)

Album cover art for the Cthulhu Saves the World Original Soundtrack

Soundtrack composed by Gordon McNeil

I confess to never actually finishing Cthulhu Saves the World JRPGs are not usually my kind of thing, but with a hilarious premise where Cthulhu, a horrific, cosmic deity, often portrayed as a harbinger of doom to humankind, ends up being an accidental hero, it's hard not to be intrigued. As I never got far into the game, there's only really been a couple of tracks that have been imprinted into my memory. One of them is this one called "The Trial" which plays in the very first dungeon. It's got a very MIDI feel to the track but this just amplifies its retro charm. It also manages to be very funky and heroic at the same time, similar to Aubrey Hodges's treatment of the Quest for Glory IV soundtrack.

The soundtrack is available for free off Gordon McNeil's bandcamp page but I'd highly recommend paying a dollar or two for the soundtrack if you're a fan of the game. It's also available off the Free VGM section at Choicest Games.
