Zerging enemy bases is getting a bit old in 8-Bit Armies

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

8-Bit Armies

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 9%

I finished a couple more levels. They really feel more like skirmish maps against a CPU than a proper campaign which is a pity. It really feels like this game was made mainly for multiplayer not single player. Tactics I've used so far consists mainly of "zerging" a mix of minigunners, rocket infantry, armoured cars and tanks: it's not terribly efficient but it seems to have worked so far.

It's an okay title but I can see why some people felt the gameplay was rather uninspired.

XCOM: Chimera Squad

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 9%

I've completed another couple of missions. Despite one of them being marked as "difficult" (the main story mission) I managed to somehow scrape through. What was scary though was coming up against a Sectoid that wasn't Verge because that means there's a chance my team can be mind-controlled now (argh).

I'm definitely taking notice of the turn order nowadays since it's a bit like a football game: the more possession you have the more control you have over the game - i.e. the more you can deny the enemy team having a chance to take the turn, the better your odds. I've also picked another new addition to my team called Patchwork. She's basically another GREMLIN operator except she has a more offensive drone than Terminal's healing one. What I especially like is the fact she can shock enemies for 4 health (which is pretty neat when you consider Adders only have 4 health)! I suspect this ability won't be as handy in the late-game but it's still good to have her on-board.

Quest for Glory II

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 38%

I didn't end up playing Quest for Glory II this week due to time constraints. I'm hoping I can get more time next week to do so.
