Getting lamps is imperative in interactive fiction games

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Act III ended up being quite a long act. In this act, you actually get to visit the Hard Times Distillery and play around with a computer simulation called Xanadu. The simulation is very similar to interactive fiction games of old: the game even gives you the ability to get a lantern (which reminds me of a documentary I watched recently called "Get Lamp" – I thoroughly recommend viewing it if you're curious about interactive fiction as a genre).

Conway is now closer to finally figuring out how to get to 5 Dogwood Drive (where he has to make his delivery) but he apparently owes a great debt to the Hard Times Distillery and that sounds ominous.

Fallout 4

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 59%

So, the Institute asked me to secure some synths at Bunker Hill, and all hell breaks loose with a fight between the Brotherhood, the Railroad and the Institute taking place. Since I was allied with all sides, I just let them fight amongst themselves and just waltzed right to where the synths were. I told them they were free to go which automatically made the Courser hostile to me. After taking him out though, that was the end of the mission, so it was quite short and sweet.

However, after failing this mission for the Institute you have to confront Father and explain to him what happened. I told him the truth and after he accuses you of being stupid, he decides to sever ties with you and you both go your separate ways. It does mean my character is now an enemy of the Institute so the mission was marked as a failure. However, despite this main storyline mission being shelved, I had no new main quest to follow-up. I hope I haven't encountered a bug but a quick read online suggests I need to level up my reputation with a particular faction before a new mission can come up. I've only got Radiant Quests left for the Minutemen but I guess I have to keep doing these before I finally get offered another story line mission. I get the feeling they could've done this better and given the player more information on what to do next (since they hold your hand for just about everything else in this game already).

Quest for Glory II

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 27%

I didn't get a chance to play Quest for Glory II this week as I was playing the other two games. Hopefully I'll get some time to play this next week.
