What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

A bit of foreshadowing there...

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 30%
Wow. I failed one sword challenge so many times that it's not even funny. I guess it's good in a way that you don't ever actually die (since you're undead I suppose) but you do feel like you're just creating more grind for yourself each time you fail thanks to all the vacant Orc captain spots being filled up again with new contenders. Argh! A lot of the combat in this relies on quick reflexes and mashing the right key at the right time and since I'm not terribly good at that, this is probably why I often fail the aforementioned challenges.

I eventually gave up and did a story mission where you save Ratbag the Coward from being executed which seemed extremely easy in comparison. Apparently Warchiefs sit at the top of the food chain (besides the Dark Lord himself) and Ratbag's next mission is to get close enough to a Warchief by convincing him that he's his new bodyguard.

Fallout 4

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 32%
I levelled up again. I wasn't quite sure that to invest the points in though so I ended up investing in Intelligence (since I want to eventually unlock the ability to use less energy from Fusion Cores while wearing Power Armour). I reckon "Gun Nut" would be another good one to aim for too since you're otherwise locked out of upgrading many of your weapons.

I cleared out some ghouls from a comic book store which convinced another settlement to join the Minutemen, but the next settlement Preston Garvey wanted me to help was a bit too far off the beaten path: while I was working my way there, I came across a Deathclaw which made mincemeat of me ... so I might try that quest another time.

Instead, I went on a research patrol or whatever they're called for the Brotherhood of Steel and despite the mission being accomplished, I kind of failed in protecting the Brotherhood Scribe.... oops. Despite what happened to the Scribe, looks like Proctor Quinlan is still willing to give me another go, so there's that.

I also reached maximum relationship level with Piper but my attempt at flirting failed; she asked if we could just remain friends instead. Awkward….

Quest for Glory I (EGA)

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 100%
I finished another playthrough as a mage! I had a bit more fun this time (getting creative with spells is much more entertaining than bludgeoning your way through puzzles) although, as mentioned in an earlier post, it seems like you don't really have much to spend on as a mage except lots of potions, which is what I ended up doing.

Now I just need to play the game as a thief and I'm done with Quest for Glory 1! Well, at least the EGA version 😊.
