What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

So You've Become a Hero!

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 17%
Well, Shadow of Mordor has been kind of frustrating this week since I failed a mission to assemble some legendary bow twice and each time you fail, an Uruk gets promoted to captain! So, I spent my time hunting these two captains down and exacting my revenge (because that's pretty much all this game is about… it should be renamed Middle-earth: Revenge of the Ranger). I like the intel system in this game that tells what the strengths and weaknesses are for each captain because if you take the time to read them up, it can make your life a whole lot easier: for example, I managed to kill one captain using a single long-range headshot (since he was susceptible to them) and I killed another with a stealthy takedown. In both cases, this meant I didn't have to waste time fighting their minions or engaging them in a lengthy duel.

Fallout 4

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 28%
Wow. It took me almost 2.5 hours all up to complete the last main storyline mission. I ended up getting revenge on Shaun's kidnapper though (Shaun is the player character's son). I now need to find a way to the Institute since they're the ones that are currently holding Shaun. I took down a lot of synths along the way. Also, when I exited the mission area I was in for a treat as you get to witness the Brotherhood of Steel bringing in the big guns, including a giant airship and a few of their transport planes.

Piper mentions that there are in fact three factions that could potentially help me get to the Institute: two I've already met (the Minutemen and the Brotherhood of Steel) but there's a third faction which I haven't and they're met yet and they're called "the Railroad", which I guess is a reference to the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War.

Quest for Glory I (EGA)

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 100%
I think I managed to finish the game by exploiting a bug but I'm not really sure. As a fighter I'm guessing you're meant to challenge a minotaur called Toro to a duel in order to gain access to the brigand stronghold. Turns out the fighter is quite adept at bashing open gates but I somehow managed to time this so that Toro never suspected me doing it! It seems a bit ridiculous in retrospect but hey I'll take it! I finished the game with 457 points out of 500 which is pretty good for me when it comes to Sierra adventures.

I probably didn't level the fighter quite enough in preparation for Quest for Glory II but hey I've got a fighter character ready to import when the time comes.

Now the question is, do I go back and play QFG1 with the other classes or do I move on to Colonel's Bequest, the next of the SCI0 adventures? It's a game I've heard a lot about but one of the Sierra adventures I've never played before... so I suspect I may have to resort to a walkthrough if things don't go too well!

I'm kind of tempted to replay Quest for Glory 1 to be honest. That way I can have most of the solutions fresh in my head. The game is also like "comfort food" for me, so there's always that 😊. So, maybe a magic user playthrough next?
