What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

Apparently every good pirate story has a bar wench in it

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Okay, I've had my second taste at combat with the alien race of pirates but this time I managed to survive long enough for them to actually give up and they offered me 50 credits in compensation – it's not quite enough to pay for all the damage they did but it's good to know that it's possible to survive combat against those guys. Unfortunately, my ship is in quite a sorry state now: the jump drive isn't as efficient as it was before and nor are the lander's thrusters. Still just under 30,000 parsecs to go too…

Urban Empire

I only got to play about half an hour of this game this week but I'm definitely playing better this time around, at least in terms of cashflow. I'm now up to the second era and all I'm doing is slowly building unimproved districts across the map. I think I've filled up half the map now so once I get to the point where I have no more room, I'll start improving existing districts. But the question will be how much improvement is too much improvement?

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

OMG! JAMES KIDD IS ACTUALLY…. A WOMAN! And apparently, she's based off Mary Read, another actual pirate. I can see why fans of the series often joke that they learnt all about history from the Assassin's Creed games – there are a lot of references to historical characters and places in this game alone. I'm not sure if all of it is 100% correct, mind you, but hey if a game can inspire a player to learn more about history, that's always a plus in my books.

Anyway, the mission involving Mary Read has Kenway running away from a lot of British soldiers, so much so that it felt like one of Captain Jack Sparrow's escapades in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Prior to the running away part, you're tasked to save some dude from the Templars but he ends up not wanting your help and alerts all the soldiers to your position. Such gratitude. I did manage to assassinate a Dutch slaver in the process though.

The point I'm currently at in the game has Blackbeard becoming frustrated and wanting to develop his persona as a fearsome pirate. It was also the first time I tried my hand at a "diving bell" mission (I never even knew the things existed). Surprisingly, Kenway can survive multiple shark attacks on his way to the surface – he's apparently that awesome.

Godus Wars

Ohnoes the AI finally beat me. It seems that veterancy really does help so the key to winning any battle is amassing a huge army at your spawn and then trying your best not to get them killed as doing so will make your opponent even harder to defeat. Also, moving units is really fiddly in this game. Sometimes I tell the units to move and it seems they don't. Other times they do end up moving but when I want to belay the order, it doesn't work, which usually results in my troops getting annihilated as they walk straight past the enemy since they won't even retaliate!

Anyway, I think I've had enough of this game and Godus - time for a review.
