Choicest VGM - VGM #348 - Quake II - Operation Overlord

Level Music by Sonic Mayhem

Time to change things up a bit. We move on from the serene, peaceful starmap music from Master of Orion II to the industrial metal of Quake II compliments of Sonic Mayham (Sascha Dikiciyan). Dikiciyan went on to compose music for several notable computer games after Quake II, including Quake III: Arena, Borderlands, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

This particular track you hear is Track 2 on the Quake II CD-ROM; the game incorporated Red Book Audio meaning you could play the soundtrack in your regular CD music player. It's called "Operation Overlord" and despite this track not playing on the main menu in the version of Quake II I've been playing recently (Quake II: Quad Damage) I'm pretty sure it's the main menu music - at least that's how I remember it. You cannot help but bang your head to this rockin' track and when I first heard this soundtrack back in the late 90s, it blew me away. Definitely one of the best game soundtracks to come out of the final years of the 20th century (man, do I sound old when I say it like that?).
