What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

The Dealer is such a troll.

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Hand of Fate

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 92%
Okay, the percentage complete has gone up by a measly 1% but that's only because I didn't realise there was another boss after the 12th one (although I really shouldn't be surprised, the Dealer is a pretty shady fellow). It took me a few more tries to get past the 12th boss and I even managed to acquire a cool ring that increases damage by 3 for every curse placed on you (which is great, since you have a LOT of curses on you for the 12th level); however, ultimate victory only came when I donned a helmet that did extra damage to lizardmen and realising that the King of Scales's minions were invulnerable while he was still alive. Very much a case of "it's easy when you know how".

So, what I believe is the real final level is a confrontation with the Dealer (the guy that actually plays the card game with you)! I've only managed to survive one wave of enemies so far but I suspect you'll have to fight all 12 bosses you've encountered up to that point but in waves of four before you can finally defeat him, and that isn't an easy feat to accomplish.

Stardew Valley

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 20%
On hold while I'm playing other games. 😊

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 25%
I haven't made any further progress on this – it's now on hold while I am distracted by… well… a lot of other games 😊.

Battlefield 1

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 10%
I haven't made any further progress on this – it's now on hold while I am distracted by… well… a lot of other games 😊.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 17%
Double assassinations are pretty cool, just saying 😊. Okay, so I managed to free some pirates, assemble a crew and escape an armada. Also, when I say "escape" this escape involved dodging friggin' waterspouts! It was all chaos, and I'm not sure if I truly understand how naval combat works in the game yet, but I managed to survive, somehow. I'm also, glad (at least so far) that Edward can handle himself pretty well in a fight because I'm terrible at the stealthy parts of the game. Don't know how long my luck will last but let's hope it does so until the end of the game 😉.

Hacknet

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 71%
I've completed a couple of more missions in Hacknet including one that involved locating where Bit is, the mysterious hacker that contacted you right at the beginning of the game. It seems like Bit started working for some organisation that eventually became unhappy with what he or she was up to... and so the plot thickens.

On one of the missions, I just had to laugh since it involved deleting somebody's credentials at the University of Western Australia, a university that I'm very familiar with… I also spent quite a bit of time on a decryption mission: I can see how this kind of game appeals to our inquisitive nature, learning everybody's dirty little secrets, which is so easy now that I have access to a decryption tool. It reminds me of the hacking mini-games in Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Watch_Dogs where they can sometimes be more fun than the actual game itself; it seems like Hacknet made sure to capitalise on this notion.
