What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

Don't let your eyes deceive you, this is actually a game

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Master of Orion 2

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 100%
Hurrah! I finally won a game of Master of Orion II – and just in time too. The Antarans were starting to shift their focus onto me again and they had a huge fleet too, one my planetary defences couldn’t counter anymore. So, I had to end up double-crossing my allies (the Trilarians) in order to win… hey, don’t look at me like that! I was playing the Darloks, it’s in our nature to backstab right, right? 😉

I think I’ve played enough of this game so time to add it to the review pipeline!

Horizon Chase Turbo

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 50%
This week I managed to unlock the Lamborghini Murcielago: it sucks at cornering so I’ll probably end up sticking with the NSX or Lancia Stratos. Also finished the Iceland Cup with one race featuring the beautiful Aurora Borealis. Nice.

Hand of Fate

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 91%
On hold while I’m playing other games. 😊

Stardew Valley

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 20%
On hold while I’m playing other games. 😊

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 25%
I haven’t made any further progress on this – it’s now on hold while I am distracted by… well… a lot of other games 😊.

Battlefield 1

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 10%

Door Kickers

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 100%
Okay, I’ve had enough of Door Kickers. It’s a pretty good game but I’m thinking it’s going to sit in 7/10 territory since it does get a bit monotonous after awhile despite the game trying to mix things up for the earlier levels. Now I’m just confused as how to approach situations, especially in open areas as you’re often up against heavily armed (and armoured) enemies where the opportunity to use stealth is almost non-existent. Also, despite there being ways to acquire intel behind doors using the optiwand, there’s no way to get intel when you’re out in the open, using something like a drone as you would in Rainbow Six Siege. Consequently, there’s no real choice but to go in all guns blazing or to keep retrying the level until you get the timing right (a bit like Hotline Miami in that respect).

Anyway, this game has now been added to the review pipeline. Next on the list appears to be Assassin’s Creed IV.

Hacknet

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 0%
Choona has picked a new game for me to play off my Pile of Shame! Yaaaay! Hacknet is the name of the game and it happens to be a “terminal-based hacking simulator” by Adelaide-based developer Matt Trobbiani (Team Fractal Alligator).

I’ve only played 15 minutes of it so far but it’s pretty cool as it has similar commands to what’s used with Linux (although simplified, of course). I also love the SimCity reference (“reticulating splines”) – old school.
