What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

This guy's apparently born on the Bayou... doo... doo... doo...

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Megarace 2

Yep, the percentage complete hasn't budged since I'm stuck on the Bayou level (the penultimate level for the game). From what I've read, fans generally acknowledge this one as being one of the toughest. I even tried using a different car (the Thunder) since the Vipper's speed and poor handling are probably a detriment on this winding and narrow track, but to no avail (since switching to another car means no money for weapons and such which can help in the first two rounds). Also, unlike other maps, taking alternate routes doesn't seem to help since while you're able to avoid traffic (which is a good thing) they seem to go too far out of the way that you'll end up losing ground.

The main problem is the stupid AI: every time I'm in the lead, they somehow manage to catch up to me with three of them flipping my car around resulting in me losing the lead, permanently. In fact, next time that happens, it's probably a waste of time even continuing the race since it's really difficult to retake that lead.

Also, Megarace 2 is one of those games where the AI is so dumb that the cars can sometimes end up driving around the track the wrong way! It can be a mixed blessing as you could probably imagine.

I finally finished the campaign, although I was very close to not making it, even on Rookie difficulty! The final mission ended up taking 2 hours to complete and you come up across some stiff resistance on the way, including a squad of two Sectopods and two mechs. I almost lost my Magi to this squad but thankfully everyone survived. When you get to the final room you face an ongoing onslaught of reinforcements as well as trying to fight three Avatars! My ranger handled the Sectoids on one side rather admirably on her own, and the squad did reasonably well against the first two Avatars and their minions, but when it came to the final one, he managed to mind-control one of my soldiers; worse, a Sectoid came along and mind-controlled a second of my soldiers! I took a gamble and decided to try and kill the final Avatar at any cost, hoping it would be mission accomplished once it was done… thankfully it paid off and the world is once again saved (for now)!

Next week, I'm going to make a start on Door Kickers.

Town of Salem

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 99%
Wow, despite the game being a chat client with a board game tacked onto it, it's actually quite addictive. I guess it helps that I like board games such as The Resistance and I've now spent much more hours than I anticipated I would on this game.

I still haven't played all the roles so I'm a bit of a n00b at them (e.g. when I failed abysmally as the Jailor). I'm also not very good at lying or influencing people so my game as Executioner/Jester didn't turn out that well either (since you have to convince people to either lynch your target, as Executioner, or yourself, as Jester). I did pretty well when playing as a Doctor, Serial Killer and Lookout (lesson learned: Serial Killer trumps Godfather if they're the only two left in the town)! I even played a game where my wife and sister-in-law were on the same mafia team – that was fun (and one of the only times where it's okay for your party to know its roles 😊)
