What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

I suddenly have the urge for green eggs and ham

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Bug crashed the game again but unfortunately my save is during the fight sequence which means I have to restore from WAAAAY back meaning I've lost a lot of progress D:. Consequently, I've had enough of this game since I can't be bothered restoring that far back.

It's a pity since the game has a lot going for it: crazy characters, humour, RPG mechanics, creative "combat" system for a visual novel and the ability to travel to several locations. It does suffer from bugs though (showstoppers pretty much if you don't want to keep second-guessing which way you should approach the game) and the amateurish MS Paint art is off-putting (even if it's meant to be intentional). I also don't really know much about the Cthulu mythos so I'm possibly at a disadvantage anyway.

Expect a review soon.

Hand of Fate

Failed the last stage despite managing to get to the final boss relatively unscathed – I bought an Explorer's Helmet from a shop early on in the stage which allowed me to see where the exits were on each of the dungeon levels which helped me reach the final boss (The King of Scales) sooner – but alas, the final battle was really difficult: you have to fight him on a small podium along with four of his lizardmen creature lackeys and damn are they tough.

Stardew Valley

Not much to say but continuing to plod along and I'm now well into the first summer in Stardew Valley/Pelican Town. Apparently there's going to be a luau next and you're meant to bring some cooked dish – only problem is, my house doesn't have a kitchen in order to cook meals :P. I've made further progress in the mine, completed more side quests for some townsfolk and have levelled up various skills in the process such as fishing (I can now buy crab pots)! I've got a chicken coop but no chickens in it since you apparently need to build a silo first in order to feed them... but you need clay to build a silo and I have no idea where you get those except from geodes which are random drops (which in turn don't always give you clay).

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes

I haven't made any further progress on this – it's now on hold while I am distracted by… well… a lot of other games 😊.

XCOM 2

Made good progress this time around and didn't lose any troops. I wasn't performing any difficult missions mind you but my "next generation" of recruits (a whole bunch of mainly squaddies) actually did pretty well and all got promoted in the process – nice! I've even managed to upgrade my squad size to six (aww yeah, NOW we're talking). Next on the radar is building this Shadow Chamber and also maybe some extra comms once I gather some supplies.

Choona has not picked a new game off my Pile of Shame for me to play this week – so I guess I had a bit of a break of sorts. Hopefully he'll have something for me next week!
