The Mandate originally featured as a game we'd "keep our eyes on" in 2015 and even featured on the list last year in 6th place. The Mandate started off as a Kickstarter project that was launched on the 3rd October 2013 and it managed to successfully raise $701,010 from 16,408 backers when the campaign came to a close on 2 December 2013. Unfortunately, this means the game has been in development for quite some time with not really that much to show for it (which has got some backers worried) but we're hoping this is a case of all good things come to those who wait, despite it being almost 3 years since development started.

There have also been some clarification and changes in direction with the project since the last time we featured The Mandate on this list, but they're not necessarily bad concessions. For example, despite the game still retaining some sandbox elements, they're going to focus more on a narrative and characters that matter, which are things I'm always looking for in a good RPG. The game also won't quite have boarding combat implemented when the game is released on Steam Early Access next year but the developers plan to implement it shortly after. Besides these minor setbacks though, we're still keen to get our hands on this sci-fi RPG with its unique Imperial-Russia-in-SPAAAAACE setting so fingers crossed we get to see some choice gameplay come 2017.
