|Look! Over there! It's Baldur's Gate! It's Icewind Dale! No! It's Pillars of Eternity!|
Yet again another Kickstarter project has made its way to the 10 Most Anticipated PC Games of 2015 list. Yet again it's one that's featured on this list before.
There's not really that much to say about Pillars of Eternity since it's basically resurrecting an oldschool style of RPG that was most popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s. There is nothing new or innovative about this game but that doesn't matter: 70,000+ backers and $4 million funding says we want a spiritual successor to those RPGs of old and who better to develop it than Obsidian Entertainment, basically the successor to Black Isle Studios?
The game promises to incorporate the memorable companions and epic exploration of Baldur's Gate, the intense combat of Icewind Dale and the emotional writing and mature themes of Planescape: Torment. From what I've seen so far, the writers and artists have done a fantastic job in creating the fantasy world of Eora and I can't wait to explore it. To be honest, I've never been one that was patient enough to experience one of those old D&D RPGs (I tended to play ones with custom systems like Fallout's SPECIAL system) but how could I say "no" to a game which will have such a rich story and memorable characters? That's what makes an adventure game or an RPG great, at least for me, and that seems to be the direction OE is heading with Pillars of Eternity.
