What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

Hoping this play has lots of explosions or I'll be disappointed.

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and myself. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Cally's Caves 4

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 25%
I'm not quite sure how long it will take for me to beat this game so I'm not exactly sure If my "Percentage Complete" figure is accurate – however, it apparently takes 6 hours to beat the predecessor Cally's Caves 3 so I'm going to use that as my yardstick.

I don't normally enjoy platformers but I'm liking Cally's Caves 4 so far (I managed to acquire a review copy of the game through Curator Connect – so thanks to VDO Games for the key). The game will be released in a few days but so far, I'm liking how the game is similar to Commander Keen except with lots of weapons to upgrade. I'm also digging the funky retro VGM for background music as well as the pixel art.

The only issues I'm having are with the default key combinations; they are quite cumbersome (I always accidentally change primary weapon instead of swinging the sword which is used for deflecting projectiles) and as you know, I'm never a fan of checkpoints for saving games, but they're pretty common in this genre.

Anyway, I've finished the first two zones and I'm now on Zone 3.

The Ghost of Joe Papp

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 100%
Finished the second game I received as a review key from Stegalosaurus Game Development. In terms of quality, I think this one is better than Super Army of Tentacles 3 but it's obviously not as ambitious since it plays out more like a traditional visual novel. Despite it being short, I did quite enjoy it, although I think being a Shakespeare buff would probably enhance your enjoyment of this title.

Hand of Fate

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 91%
Tried the final level again and didn't even get far enough to fight the boss! It's tough you're receiving new curses as you attempt to get closer to your objective! Not quite sure when I'll finally finish Hand of Fate but hopefully soon...

Stardew Valley

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 19%
Survived the Luau – you're not actually meant to cook something but contribute a high-quality ingredient instead (so my bowl of spaghetti I bought from the saloon turned out to be useless). Unfortunately, I thought you could put more than one ingredient in and I put in some seaweed... and nothing else. So apparently, the luau was ruined thanks to my poor choice in ingredient! Also, down to level 35 of the mines – just 5 more to go! I also purchased a Pirate Sword from the Adventurer's Guild – should help me fight the beasties further down...

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 25%
I haven't made any further progress on this – it's now on hold while I am distracted by... well... a lot of other games 😊.

Battlefield 1

  • Picked by Me
  • Percentage Complete = 10%
I haven't made any further progress on this – it's now on hold while I am distracted by... well... a lot of other games 😊.

XCOM 2

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 34%
Unfortunately, I ran out of time this week to actually even give XCOM 2 a go due to reviewing games submitted to me by indie devs not to mention I've been feeling sick for most of this week. I endeavour to put in double the time for XCOM 2 next week.

Fortnite

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 0%
Choona has not picked a new game off my Pile of Shame for me to play this week – but I decided to pick a game for him since he ended up gifting me a key for this game which is apparently quite popular at the moment. Stay tuned to learn more about it next week! 😊
