What I've Been Playing This Week (aka Pile of Shame Sunday)

Yes, you read that right. We're going to drop the F-bomb, literally.

The following post is part of a series of posts that are published every Sunday to update readers on what Mark G has been up to with respect to finishing off games on his "Pile of Shame". The games to target are picked by Choicest Games contributors Choona, Luke and Lanna. As I'll be talking about my progress through these games, there may be spoilers ahead, especially for games containing a narrative. Consider yourself warned.

Minecraft: Story Mode

  • Picked by Lanna
  • Percentage Complete = 37%

I managed to complete three episodes in Minecraft: Story Mode this week and I'm still not entirely convinced that the plot holds up to previous Telltale adventures – there's just too many inconsistencies such as in one episode, a character tells us not to steal anything and then she goes ahead and does so anyway – there's no conversation option to make a point of that at all and it's just swept under the rug. The characters all act very childishly too although maybe that's the point if the target demographic are tweens.

While the animation still isn't as choppy as other Telltale adventures lip synching is pretty poor (how could you even get that wrong in a game like this?) not to mention the audio cuts out at the wrong times too. There are also occasional graphical glitches on some character models.

One thing I do like about this Telltale adventure is that episode two can actually pan out quite differently depending on which hero you choose to recruit (one's an engineer called Ellegard and another is a rogue called Magnus). Often, the choices you make in Telltale adventures are superficial and this is also the case for Minecraft: Story Mode (i.e. you still reach the same point at the end of episode two) but this time you at least get to experience an episode in an entirely different way (e.g. different supporting characters, different locales, different goals, etc.) depending on the choices you make – neat!

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes

  • Picked by Lanna
  • Percentage Complete = 25%

I haven't made any further progress on this – it's now on hold while I am distracted by Telltale adventures 😊.

Battlefield 1

  • Picked by Lanna
  • Percentage Complete = 10%

I haven't made any further progress on this – it's now on hold while I am distracted by Telltale adventures 😊.

Company of Heroes 2

  • Picked by Luke
  • Percentage Complete = 86%

Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to commit to a game of Company of Heroes 2 this week so I'll have to leave this for next week. I'll be sure to make a concerted effort to finish the game since I'm soooo close to doing so.

World of Goo

  • Picked by Choona
  • Percentage Complete = 100%

I probably spent close to 30 minutes each on the two penultimate levels you need to unlock the final level in World of Goo. I was about to throw in the towel on both of them but thankfully managed to get past both of them and complete the final level tonight – so I've finally finished World of Goo!

I think the game was just the right difficulty since every time I'd encounter a challenging level, I'd always manage to solve it on my last attempt just prior to giving up. The game does come with skip tokens (like A Virus Named Tom) but unlike that game, I didn't end up using them.

So, now onto Peggle it seems... argh another puzzle game (although it's probably more of a Pachinko game rather than a puzzle game).
