Game Guides now added to Choicest Games

Choicest Games - now with Game Guides

I just noticed that I have actually quite a few guides written for games that I've played and reviewed over the past few years so it only makes sense to have a page that directs you to all of them. This is exactly what I've done. It only has 6 guides at the moment but it's a start and definitely enough to warrant the creation of the page in the first place :).

So if you want some useful or just interesting info on games such as Civilization: Beyond Earth, Loom, Gems of War or Elite: Dangerous, why not check it out?

Top 10 MA-Rated Games on Choicest Games

Bioshock Infinite - one of the top 10 MA15+ games on Choicest Games

Finally we come to the top 10 MA-Rated Games on Choicest Games. I've previously covered the top 10 G-Rated Games, PG-rated games and M-rated games so this is going to be the final one in this series. "But wait," you say. "What about R18+ rated games?" Well, I've definitely reviewed a few R18+ titles (namely South Park: The Stick of Truth, The Walking Dead Season 2, Far Cry Blood Dragon and Mars: War Logs) but there's simply not enough of them to make a top 10 list.

In Australia, media that is rated "MA15+" or "MA" means the content is legally restricted to mature audiences of 15 years old and above. This means a person may be asked to show their proof of age before purchasing an MA15+ game. However, if you do so in the presence of a parent or guardian, then it's fine - so long as it's the actual parents or the guardian is over 18. MA15+ games are meant to contain content that is strong in impact, which means sex scenes, strong coarse language and strong violence. Here are the top 10 to feature on Choicest Games:

  1. Mass Effect 2
  2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  3. Mass Effect 3
  4. Battlefield 3
  5. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  6. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  7. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
  8. Left 4 Dead
  9. Fallout 3
  10. Bioshock Infinite

MA15+ rated games are by far the most represented on Choicest Games. So if I take into account all the 36 MA-rated games that I've reviewed on Choicest Games, what kind of genres made this list? This is what they tended to be:

  • First Person Shooters
  • First Person RPGs
  • Third Person Shooters
  • RPGs
  • Hack 'n' Slash Action RPGs
  • Turn-based Tactics
  • Adventure games based on comic books

There aren't actually many genres that come under the MA15+ rating it seems and they're mostly shooters, which makes sense as usually a sign of a good shooter is realism, which usually means lots of blood and gore. Other popular genres such as Real-Time Strategy games, MMORPGs, racing games, sports games and puzzle games seem to be scarce when it comes to the MA15+ rating.

The MA15+ rating used to be the highest rating for games in Australia until the recent addition of an R18+ rating. However, that still hasn't stopped some games being refused classification outright (which is the equivalent of banning the game from being sold in the country).

Also, statistics for statistics sake:

  • Total number of games reviewed that are rated "MA15+": 36
  • Highest rating for an "MA15+" game: 9/10
  • Lowest rating for an "MA15+" game: 5/10

And that's all for the Top 10 games on Choicest Games by Australian Classification Rating! Thanks for reading!

Where are they now? - Tom Hall

Commander Keen - one of Tom Hall's most famous creations

The next person to feature on "Where are they now?" is one that has already featured on this blog and has also collaborated many times with the bloke that featured last week. Tom Hall is I believe one of the most important developers in PC gaming due to his contributions to well-loved games such as Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, Rise of the Triad and Anachronox. However, how did he get his start in PC game development and what is he up to nowadays?

Hall was born in Wisconsin in 1964 and when he became of age (I'm guessing in the early 1980s) graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Computer Science. During the early 1980s, Tom worked on several games on his Apple II+ he purchased in 1980, many in BASIC.

In 1987 he got a job working at Softdisk as a programmer and editor, and it is here that he would eventually meet John Romero, John Carmack and Adrian Carmack. Hall worked on several games there before he co-founded id Software with Romero and the Carmacks in 1991.

1990 and 1991 were busy years for Hall and his colleagues at id Software. Hall was designer on all the Commander Keen games that were released during those years and is responsible for creating the much loved PC gaming icon, the Dopefish (who features in Commander Keen 4). Hall was also director on 1992's Wolfenstein 3D and the Creative Director on id's 1993 hit DOOM.

Due to some disputes over the gore and violence in DOOM, Hall left id Software in 1993 and moved to Apogee/3D Realms. There he worked on the writing for 1994's Hocus Pocus, as the Creative Director on 1994's Rise of the Triad and Co-Producer for 1995's Terminal Velocity.

Hall left in Apogee/3D Realms in 1996 to form Ion Storm with former id Software colleague, John Romero. Ion Storm produced the legendary computer game Deus Ex but Hall was responsible for 2001's best-game-you-never-played, Anachronox - one of my favourite RPGs of all time. It was this year that Hall and Romero left Ion Storm to found Monkeystone Games which focused on the development of mobile games. Hall worked on a few games here such as Hyperspace Delivery Boy!, Congo Cube, Jewels and Jim and Dig It! before leaving in 2003 with Romero to join Midway Games.

At Midway Games, Hall worked as Creative Director on 2005's NARC and Writer on 2005's Area-51. He also left in 2005 to join Kingsisle Entertainment, a company specialising in Massively Multiplayer Online games.

Hall suffered a stroke in 2010 but fortunately recovered and in 2011 joined Romero's company Loot Drop which specialises in developing games for social media. He was Creative Director for 2012's Pettington Park before launching a Kickstarter project in 2013 for a project called Worlds of Wander. The project promised to be a spiritual successor to Commander Keen and also double as a tool for developing platform games. Unfortunately the project only received $107,766 of its $400,000 target and never saw the light of day.

The last thing that Hall posted on his personal blog is that he joined the company PlayFirst (famous for their Diner Dash games) as Principal Designer. According to his Twitter feed, that still seems to be the case. But what of Hall's awesome legacy? Games like Commander Keen and Anachronox? Will he ever make games like those again? I really hope so since I have really fond memories of them.

First Impressions - Grim Fandango Remastered

Gotta love that Art Deco lobby

Wow it wasn't long ago that I talked about another game that was remastered but here we go again. This time, it's a classic adventure game which was coincidentally developed around the same time as the first Resident Evil in the late 1990s. I'm talking about Grim Fandango, a classic Lucasarts adventure game set in an Aztec-inspired but Art-Deco styled afterlife. You play the role of Manny Calavera ("calavera" is Spanish for "skull" - you learn something new everyday) a travel agent with the Department of Death who reaps souls from the Land of the Living and then arranges to give them luxury transportation for their journey through the nine levels of the afterlife. How well someone has lived their lives dictates whether they can afford better transportation - so a saint would be able to afford the coveted Number 9 train that takes you to the ninth level of eternal rest in 4 minutes instead of 4 years (or at least that's what Manny says as part of his sales pitch). Manny isn't getting any "good" customers as of late and it's up to you to get to the bottom of it.

It's obviously a very unique world, one that hasn't really been replicated (except maybe for Guacamelee! which is obviously inspired by Grim Fandango). Consequently its an interesting setting plus its previous critical successes should at least pique the interest of the younger generation who haven't played the original before. For those of us, like me, who have played the original though, is it worth buying again?

Well the answer is easy in my case since I've misplaced my original copy somewhere - so a new remastered, digital copy is a no-brainer :). For the rest of you, here's what you've got to look forward to:

What I like

  • Very faithful remaster: Just as it was with the recently released Resident Evil remaster, this is a very faithful one. In fact, so much so I don't think any scenes or puzzles have changed. The voice acting hasn't been touched either.
  • High-res textures: The guys at Double Fine have applied high-res textures to all the character models so they're looking a lot sharper nowadays than they used to back in 1998.
  • Redone soundtrack: I haven't really noticed any differences between the new soundtrack and the old one but apparently it's been redone so it's higher quality. They must've done a pretty good job if it's that seamless!
  • Point 'n' click: You're now able to play the game with just the mouse like a traditional point 'n' click adventure! Yay! You can still use the old method of controlling Manny too if you wish.

What I don't like

  • Not totally point 'n' click: While they have given you the option to just use a mouse to move around the screen and interact with objects, it's still not exactly like traditional point 'n' clicks since you still have the old inventory system which involves cycling through objects and then making the object the "active" object before you can interact with things. It would've been nice if they would've allowed you to just drag and drop items from your inventory but obviously that would've required more work.
  • Low-res backgrounds: While the character models have received the high-res treatment the backgrounds have not - they're exactly the same as the original. This means it's even more apparent how much things have changed when you've got the high-res Manny walking around the garage to meet a low-res Glottis stumbling out of his hut (only for Glottis to turn into a high-res version of himself after the animation is complete).
  • Character models: The character models are still the old character models which means a low polygon count (which isn't too much of a problem) and lots of clipping (something I think they could've done a better job on)
  • Maybe a bit pricey?: The game is $15 USD which is more expensive than the Monkey Island remake. Admittedly this is a 3D adventure game and not a 2D one and some things have been altered (like the ability to use point 'n' click) but it still has to be mentioned.

Verdict

This is exactly what I expected from a remastered version of the game - well almost. While there are very occasional graphical glitches and the clipping of the polygons make the character models look out-of-date (despite the high-res textures) everything else is the way it should be - and you can finally play the game as a point 'n' click adventure too! I'm just happy Grim Fandango is available on PC again so that everyone can enjoy its greatness - however, I'm still not going to type out that review until I've finished the game again :).

Choicest VGM - VGM #166 - Police Quest - The Briefing

Composed by: Rob Atesalp

This particular track plays when you attend your first briefing in the VGA version of Sierra's Police Quest. During the briefing, Sergeant Dooley, Sonny Bonds's superior officer, provides an update on crimes to the Lytton Police Department Traffic Division. It manages to employ the main theme used in the introduction but at a slower almost methodical pace which I think is perfect background music for a briefing.

Thanks to Sierra On-Line and Quest Studios for providing these memorable tracks.

Skyborn Review

Don't mess with Claret. She's a feisty one!

  • Developer: Dancing Dragon Games
  • Publisher: Degica
  • Release Date: 21 February 2014
  • Time played: 9 hours

I've already mentioned this in my First Impressions post for this game but I don't generally like Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs). I like people who try things different with the genre such as what was done with To the Moon or more recently Always Sometimes Monsters but if it's a traditional JRPG then I'm usually out. However, I do happen to own a copy of RPG Maker and I'd like to someday in my free time ("hah!") make a game with it so it always pays to check out the competition right? Well thanks to the generosity of the master of Steam games, Mix-Master, I managed to score a free copy of an RPG Maker game (cheers bro). That RPG Maker game happens to be Skyborn.

So I eventually gave it a shot and while it ended up confirming why I disliked the genre it had some redeeming qualities as well. Here's what I thought.

Plot (4/5)
You play the role of a young woman named Claret Spencer who is apparently a mechanical genius. She lives in a Steampunk world where humans, despite their prowess with technology, are treated as second-class citizens and are ruled by a race of winged warriors known as the Skyborn. Claret's world starts to eventually turn upside down and it's not long before she's involved in a conflict to decide the very fate of the world itself.

While Skyborn's plot is your typical epic fantasy adventure to some degree it has some things going for it. Firstly, the setting is very reminiscent of an older RPG called Arcanum in that you have a world that has both steampunk technology and magic - a setting that has always appealed to me. Also, despite the forces of good fighting the forces of evil, the characters you'll meet and the ones even in your party, aren't two-dimensional. All have skeletons in their closets and the fact that they're all fallible makes them seem more real, more human - and as a consequence you start to develop an attachment to the characters. That's definitely something you want in an RPG and the game feels a lot less childish to some of its competitors.

I also liked the fact that Dancing Dragon knew how to make a proper epilogue. Thank God. You have no idea how hard it is to find a game nowadays that takes the effort in telling you what has happened to your beloved characters. This is one thing Skyborn achieves admirably although it does seem ripe for a sequel though.

Gameplay (2/5)
Skyborn is for all intents and purposes your typical JRPG. That means a linear storyline, no character customisation and turn-based combat which is heavily reliant on number crunching. They do try to do things slightly different by adding a simple crafting system which I liked, but that's about it.

Consequently, I really disliked the combat and to make matters worse, the battles aren't easy, especially if you don't put in the time to grind your characters to as high a level as possible - if you don't, they get smashed. Unfortunately, even if you do manage to kill all mobs of monsters on the way there's still a chance you can lose with some bosses since it's all decided by the RNG (Random Number Generator) God.

I know it's pretty normal for RPGs to be reliant on dice rolls - even Western RPGs do this. However, I've always found that JRPGs are really the sort of games that reward the completionists or perfectionists out there that explore every nook and cranny in a game. While I tend to do this somewhat in Western RPGs too, I only do so if it adds to the story. I don't want to spend time killing the same mob of monsters 100 times if it doesn't offer any tangible reward except experience - that's just grind. I might as well go play an MMORPG if that were the case!

Anyway, when I dropped the difficulty down from "Normal" to "Easy" at least the battles seemed manageable for the latter half of the game. It's a shame that the game is so difficult on Normal difficulty since any JRPG n00bs like myself would've probably given up by then and not experience the story when it starts to pick up.

Oh one more thing I disliked: the fact you only get four save game slots. I'm not sure if this is a limitation due to RPG Maker but it's an annoying one if it is.

I prefer orange jelly thanks.

Sound (3/5)
There's no voice acting and there's only very basic sound effects used. So basic that they may have in fact used stock sound effects that come with RPG Maker. While it's fine to use the default sounds if they make sense (e.g. gunshots when you use a rifle) some of the sound effects seem a bit lazy, such as some weird synth waveform for when your character uses the "Taunt" ability - something resembling a shout or an insult would've been better.

Music (4/5)
While there are some good tracks here there's a lot of stuff that sounds like MIDI and sometimes you even get some cheesy 80s rock music for combat - but that's very typical for retro JRPGs anyway so it's not entirely out of place.

Graphics (3/5)
The game has your typical JRPG graphics: a cute, retro representation of the world with manga-style avatars whenever party members speak. While I liked the artwork used for the party members the rest is pretty stock-standard stuff - in fact, I'm pretty sure some RPG Maker assets were reused.

Replay (1/5)
I believe the battles are too difficult on normal difficulty, at least for JRPG n00bs like myself, and as a result I didn't enjoy the game at first since not only did I have to put up with a dull combat system where I didn't feel like I was in control, but I had to deal with the odds being stacked against me too. Fortunately, setting the game on "Easy" difficulty actually seems just about right for anyone not accustomed to JRPGs (and I recommend you play on this setting if you're in a similar situation to me). The game seems rather linear with no Steam achievements or trading cards so I don't know if there's much incentive to go replay the game anyway.

Polish (4/5)
RPG Maker games seem to have issues integrating with Steam and Skyborn is no exception. F12 seems to be the hotkey for restarting the game so I strongly recommend not trying to take a screenshot while playing the game through Steam! There's also no Steam overlay as well which means alt+tabbing in order to respond to messages or browsing the web.

Score – 6/10

I'm not a fan of JRPGs and while Skyborn tries to innovate it's ultimately not enough to make me forgive the linear nature of these kind of games or the fact they're unforgiving if you're unwilling to grind for an obscene number of hours. Skyborn did surprise me with its plot though since it's much better than your typical JRPG and if you're willing to pay the $14.99 USD you may indeed develop an attachment to its Steampunk setting and intriguing characters.

Kill the Bad Guy Review

Death by smelly garbage it shall be!

  • Developer: Exkee
  • Publisher: Exkee
  • Release Date: 28 May 2014
  • Time played: 2 hours

I actually didn't purchase Kill the Bad Guy by choice (despite it having a pretty choice sounding name) but it was actually meant to be a gift for a mate on Steam. Unfortunately, he already had the game (along with several others) so I ended up with an extra game in my library I knew little about.

I didn't include a "plot" score for this game since despite it making up some silly (but sometimes humourous) story that you're part of some global vigilante organisation taking out the world's worst terrorists, criminals and dictators, it's obviously just lip service. What you've really come to do is play the 60+ puzzles they have on offer.

So are the puzzles any good and what's a puzzle game got to do with killing bad guys?

Gameplay (4/5)
The objective of the game, as the game title has already spelt out for us is to kill the bad guy. On each level, the bad guy walks from one side of the map to another and your job is to ensure he doesn't make it to the other end alive by using a variety of tools and traps. Sometimes you're given seemingly harmless things like rope, crates and trees - other times you're given shurikens, javelins and lighters. Each level presents its own different challenges and the best part is there's usually more than one way to kill your target encouraging some creativity. However, as you progress through the game things will get trickier since the number of bystanders, cops and cameras increase and you have to perform these assassinations without anyone knowing.

Kill the bad guy without anyone noticing and you complete the level. If you manage to kill him on the first day, find a passport that's hidden on the map, grab the bad guy's tooth when he's killed and cause some blood splatter, you'll be rewarded with even more points.

While I was admittedly hesitant when first playing this game I think the gameplay is really novel: it's like Lemmings in reverse where instead of trying to avoid traps on the way to the exit, you're actually the one setting the traps. The game also requires some element of timing and stealth, since if the bad guy, bystanders, cameras or cops notice what you're up to it's usually game over (I say "usually" because there is an achievement you can get for killing the bad guy while he's trying to run away after noticing one of your traps).

Sometimes all it takes is a dodgy lamp post

Sound (5/5)
No complaints about the audio - I especially like the sound sample that plays when the "Bad Guy" is disappointed: "Oh..."

Music (3/5)
There isn't a huge variety of music and there's only two that stand out for me: the funky spy music that plays sometimes in-game and the hip hop track they have for the main menu theme.

Graphics (3/5)
The game really only has three "colours": white, black and red. While the game is in 3D it uses very basic models to animate everything - but that's okay since to do otherwise would probably distract from the actual gameplay.

Replay (2/5)
I enjoyed the couple of hours I played of the game and it's definitely one of those games you could just spend a short time with and still feel like you've accomplished something - unless you're absolutely stumped on a level, which happens sometimes. Whatever the case, each attempt at the level shouldn't take long at all - I think that's what I'm mainly getting at. Oh the game also has Steam achievements and Steam trading cards to collect too.

Polish (5/5)
No major bugs encountered and the interface works well enough.

Score – 7/10

If you're short on time and want a puzzle game that's Lemmings in reverse, Kill the Bad Guy could be just the game for you.

Is the game worth $9.99 USD?: Yes

GOG selling classic adventure games up to 90% off this weekend

Gotta love this guy's jacket

Ahhh adventure games, point 'n' click adventure games in particular, are one of my favourite genres in PC gaming. So while I'm always excited to see a weekend sale on games, I especially get interested when there's one on adventure games, especially point 'n' click adventures. That's exactly what GOG are doing this weekend giving up to 90% off 23 of its adventure games (although the number is probably higher than that since a couple of "games" are actually bundles of games).

Since I am such a fan though, unfortunately many of the games that are on sale, I already own (first world problems). There are a lot of Telltale adventures here like Back to the Future, Tales of Monkey Island and the Sam & Max games as well as some non-Telltale games like the Simon the Sorcerer series and Tex Murphy series.

What I'm probably most interested in though are the bunch of retro, point 'n' click adventures developed using Adventure Game Studio, which are often published or even developed by Wadjet Eye Games, such as The Blackwell Series, The Shivah, Gemini Rue, Resonance, Primordia and A Golden Wake.

The last one is the only one out of that list of games that I don't have so I've just got to finish the collection :) and at 70% off for A Golden Wake, that's not a bad deal.

If I were asked to recommend you just three though, which would I pick? Well based on the scores on Choicest Games, these three:

  1. Resonance ($3.69)
  2. The Shivah ($1.89)
  3. Tales of Monkey Island ($4.29)

All for under $10 :)! It should give you a good taste of some quality retro point 'n' click adventure games published by Wadjet Eye Games as well as what is basically the 5th entry to the Monkey Island saga (might help to have played the previous four though, and don't ask me how you can get a copy of Curse of Monkey Island or Escape from Monkey Island)!

First Impressions - Resident Evil HD REMASTER

"That was too close! You were almost a Jill sandwich!"

While I don't normally like survival horror games or zombie games, I have a special place in my heart for the original Resident Evil, you know, the one that came out in 1996 on the Playstation? Wow, that game really blew me away back in the day.

In 2002, a critically acclaimed remake was released on the GameCube and now, more than a decade later, we've got a remaster of that remake. So this is basically Resident Evil: The Remake: The Remaster. Still with me? Good.

Anyway, I've got my mate SirWraith to thank for this generous gift. He's quite a big fan of the original game so he just wanted to share the love. While I'm nowhere near finishing the game I have played it enough to give some initial thoughts on it. So am I having fun with this game? Is it as good as the original?

What I like

  • Quite faithful: This is a very faithful remake to the original so it's definitely catering for the "purist" crowd when it comes to remakes. The maps are practically the same and so are the room puzzles. They even kept the mini-loading screens each time you opened a door. They did get rid of the mini-loading screens when you climbed up and down stairs though - thank God.
  • Better graphics: The graphics are pretty good, considering this is a remaster of a game that came out in 2002! Character models look good and there are apparently several other graphical improvements such as the use of non-static 3D models for the backgrounds (instead of what they call "video backgrounds"), bloom effects, higher resolutions and widescreen support.
  • Sharper audio: The quality of the audio is definitely better and so is the voice acting. There's also support for 5.1 channel surround sound now.
  • Same soundtrack: I'm not sure if they re-recorded the soundtrack but it's fantastic that they managed to use the same themes from the original.

What I don't like

  • They fixed the voice acting: This isn't really a valid criticism since now the game has better voice acting. It's still not fantastic at times but it's a lot better than the original including the scriptwriting. Although I still kind of miss the original since the voice acting was so bad it was good, hilarious even.
  • Still very much console-friendly: You can use keyboard and mouse to play this and while it's functional it feels a bit clunky, especially when you start navigating the status screen. It's obviously optimised for a controller.
  • Camera angles: I know the camera angles weren't that great in the original and that's part of the suspense: not knowing where exactly that zombie is lurking about but hearing him moan and groan nonetheless. There is no denying that it can be annoying sometimes, especially when the controls keep changing direction each time you move to a different scene.
  • No FMV: Again, another criticism that's probably invalid. I really enjoyed the cheesy FMV scenes in the original game. These are gone and have been replaced with 3D graphics.
  • "Breast physics": If you play as Jill Valentine in the game it won't take long to realise that CAPCOM must've hired Dead or Alive's Team Ninja to finetune the "breast physics" in the game. Hmmm I suddenly feel hungry for some jelly.

Verdict

The game is more-or-less a faithful remake of the original Resident Evil, which is a good thing. Resident Evil strikes a good balance between suspense and moments of sheer terror and panic. The game even has some basic adventure game elements which you don't tend to see in modern zombie games (except for, of course, The Walking Dead) which is probably why I ended up liking the original in the first place. Definitely keen to continue playing this one.

Where are they now? - John Romero

John Romero - co-founder of id Software

For today's "Where are they now?" post I thought I'd pick one of the legends of PC gaming, one who worked on several groundbreaking PC games such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. As you can see, these are all First Person Shooters (FPS) and consequently he was quite instrumental in bringing about its popularity. I am talking about Mr John Romero, co-founder of one of the iconic brands in PC gaming, id Software.

But how did Romero's story start? Well, Romero was born in 1967 in Colorado Springs, Colorado - and the only reason I've heard of the place is because I did a school physics project on Nikola Tesla, and apparently he performed quite a few experiments there. Anyway, that's a really big tangent so let's get back on track.

So apparently when Romero was only entering his teens he started developing computer games in the early 80s for the Apple II (seemed to be the "in" thing during the early 80s - developing games for the Apple II that is). While he was quite prolific with the number of games he developed, only a few of them managed to get published and distributed by computer gaming magazines, and some several years later. Romero's first published game came about in 1984 and it was called Scout Search. It wasn't until 1987 that Romero would get his first "industry" job at Origin working on a Commodore 64 port of Chuck Bueche's 2400 A.D.. Unfortunately, the project was canned due to low sales so towards the end of the 80s, Romero moved to Louisiana to work for a company called Softdisk in its Special Projects division. Eventually Romero started a PC Gaming division in July 1990 and would end up hiring John Carmack, Adrian Carmack and Tom Hall to his ranks. They left Softdisk in 1991 to form id Software but not before Romero, Carmack and Hall had worked on the classic Commander Keen platformer games which were released in 1990 and 1991.

The early to mid 1990s was a golden age for the First Person Shooter and it's primarily thanks to John Romero and the rest of the team at id Software (you already know what I think of Tom Hall, considering he's one of my top 10 game developers of all time). Romero would go on to develop 1992's Wolfenstein 3D and 1993's Doom. After that, Romero primarily focused on developing engine tools for id's games such as 1993's Blake Stone, 1994's Rise of the Triad, 1994's Heretic (which he was also executive producer for), 1995's Hexen (which he was also designer and executive producer) and 1996's Quake. He even managed to be credited with developing the tools for the game that put Valve on the map, 1998's Half-Life.

Apparently Romero and Carmack clashed over the development of Quake and once the game was completed, for whatever reason, Romero was forced to resign. Romero then co-founded Ion Storm in Dallas, Texas with id co-worker Tom Hall. While Ion Storm is probably best known for classic games like Deus Ex and Tom Hall's Anachronox (which Romero provided level design for), it's also known for the infamous John Romero's Daikatana, a game that was first announced to be released in 1997 but ended up being three years late resulting in a lot of negative press. There was also a lot of negative press about the game's marketing campaign especially the tagline: "John Romero's About To Make You His Bitch....Suck it down". It's not surprising that the game was critically panned on release and is considered by many critics as one of the worst games of all time. I've yet to personally play it though so I cannot vouch for what the majority feel ;).

During the 2000s, Romero worked at a few companies (Monkeystone Games, Midway Games, Slipgate Ironworks and Gazillion Entertainment), often collaborating with his colleague Tom Hall. Romero left Gazillion Entertainment in 2010 and formed a social game company called Loot Drop with his game designer wife, Brenda Brathwaite (they married in 2012).

So I guess what most of you really want to know is whether John Romero is ever going to work on a First Person Shooter again? Well you'll be happy to know that a few months ago it was reported by Joystiq that he is indeed working on one although details seem to be pretty light on what it's actually about or who else is involved.

Introduction

While frequenting one of my favourite forums I came across a player who was struggling to find the nearest location to purchase a Viper. Other posters did direct him to the Elite: Dangerous wiki which contains some locations but I noticed it didn't seem to have any for the region of space I'm currently exploring which happens to lie along the Federation-Empire border. Consequently, I thought it would be handy for my own sake to record where you could buy particular ships, starting in this region and I'll see where I go from here. The reason I've posted it here is that I'm hoping that it helps other Elite: Dangerous Commanders too.

I've also taken the liberty to do some extra research on the stations to determine if there is a pattern based on the station economy, faction allegiance, government type, etc. I'll record any potential theories or findings below the data if anyone's interested.

Research Notes

Last updated: 22/10/2015

Here are my findings/theories so far based on analysing the station economies, faction allegiances, government types, etc.
  1. The station with the most ships available at any given time seems to be 23 out of 23 ships. 8 stations on this list have more than 12 ships for sale and they are all High Tech or Industrial dual economies (usually with Refinery)
  2. Stations with the same economies in the same system tend to sell the same ships - although there are exceptions.
  3. Stations with Industrial or High Tech economies tend to have the best range of ships.
  4. Agriculture economies tend to have 5 or 6 ships for sale and they're usually freighters. There are exceptions though.
  5. Freighters tend to be more common than combat vessels or more expensive vessels.
  6. Refinery economies tend to have the worst range (3-5 ships).
  7. The Orca is found on 35 stations on this list - most of them run a High Tech economy although there are exceptions (such as Tourism).

Additional Notes about Powerplay

Last updated: 27/06/2015

Thanks to the Powerplay update it is now possible for the Control systems of certain Powers to unlock the purchase of specific ships. Below is a list of which ships are available under each Power:
  1. Zemina Torval Control Systems stock all Imperial ships
  2. Zachary Hudson Control Systems stock all Core Dynamics ships, i.e. the Eagle, Vulture and Federal Dropship
  3. Li Yong-Rui Control Systems stock the Cobra, Diamondback, Asp and Python
