Top 10 Game Publishers of All Time

So I've finally gone through what I believe are the top 10 game publishers of all time. Generally, the ones that sell the most games that I'm interested in get to be at the top. Remember, these are publishers, which means sometimes (or most of the time) they don't actually develop the games. However, the ones at the top are obviously the ones that have discovered talent or have simply been in the business for a very long time.

I've decided to summarise them in this post. Be sure to comment on what you believe are the best game publishers out there!
  1. EA
  2. Sierra
  3. Lucasarts
  4. Valve
  5. Activision
  6. Microprose
  7. Microsoft
  8. Atari
  9. Virgin Interactive
  10. 2K Games

  1. Bethesda should be there.
Quake, Fallout and The Elder Scrolls.

  2. Hey Anonymous,

Thanks for commenting. Bethesda Softworks actually just missed out on making the list. While they publish good games (I did include all recent Elder Scrolls games and Fallout 3) they don't publish quite as frequently as the others (I'm going mainly on the number of games published)

Quake was originally published by GT Interactive (which makes this study a bit more challenging due to some games having several publishers over their lifespan).

  3. valve should be number one because its makes some of the most popular games ever like portal halflife and team fortress 2 and it owns the biggest pc game marketplace steam.

  4. Thanks for posting! I agree that Valve's games are definitely popular but just like Bethesda Softworks, they don't really develop/publish many games. Yes they have Steam which is probably the biggest PC games digital distribution network out there, but most of those games aren't Valve games.

In doing this analysis I've taken my entire gaming history and since Valve and Steam only came about in the last decade or so, it hasn't had much of an impact on gaming in the 80s and early-mid 90s.

If I were to do an analysis on who has released the most popular or crtically acclaimed games, then yes, Valve would definitely be up there, probably Bethesda Softworks too.

  5. Nr.1 = Rockstar Games !

  6. Thanks for posting! Rockstar (at least in its early days) was mainly a one trick pony and just like Bethesda, didn't really publish much except for one series. In the case of Rockstar that's obviously Grand Theft Auto. They did start to diversify over the years, publishing the Manhunt, Midnight Club, Max Payne and Red Dead series, however their games have been very console focused and as a result I never really got into them :).
